Let's begin...

STEP 1: Identify The Source Of The Fear

Back in 2014 I had a wonderful opportunity to consult for a major hospital facility on the east coast. My husband drove me up to Chicago to the airport and I flew over there to do my job. I had been assigned to this firm to supervise and consult quarterly meetings.

Well, this wasn’t my first rodeo. I came with years of experience.

At this meeting, I was surrounded by VERY important people with very important titles. I was onsite for the week, prepared for the meeting, met wonderful and nice people, and the week concluded on the day I hosted the meeting. Business as usual.

You say Ax And Not ASK! πŸ€ͺ

Once I had returned home safely, I received a call from my recruiter about my performance. Go ahead. I know I did good. I always thrive to do my best you know - this is what I’m thinking.

However, what I heard shocked me. After speaking with the boss, they politely requested that I be replaced with someone else who spoke better English. WHAT?!! I’m from Illinois for Pete’s Sake. What are they talking about?

Well being from the Midwest, I guess certain words I speak aren’t proper. One example they said is when saying 'ASK' I pronounce it as 'Ax.' So despite that fact that I knew what I was talking about, it really didn’t matter. Since it was the ONLY complaint that they had, I and they were advised that they were in good hands and I would be continuing. And so that stuck with me for a while.

To this day it's hard for me to really hop on a Facebook Live, a phone call, a stage, live webinar, anything where people have to hear me live because I’m worried about being judged for my speech.  So that’s a real block for me.

Now your turn...

  • What is your fear with hosting a webinar?
  • What are you afraid of?
  • What’s the worst thing that could happen and what did happen in your past that follows a similar pattern?

Try to identify the fear or that story.

By the way, if you're NOT going to let fear stop you and YOU are ready to get started with webinars, I've written a comprehensive webinar workbook with ACTIONABLE STEPS to help you to create and host your webinar in the NEXT 30 DAYS. STEP 2: Identify The Truth Of Your Fear

Once you identify the fear that is holding you back, you will need to answer one question: Is it true?

For example, if the fear is that you might look stupid in front of a bunch of people, ask yourself is it true? Is it true that you would look stupid to other people? Have you ever been in a situation before where you had to address a group of people, such as an Easter speech, high school play, or a class presentation and did the audience think you were stupid?

Your answer will either be 'Yes' or 'No'.

If the answer is ‘No’, proceed to step number 3.

Your Answer is 'Yes'

OK. So it is true. As in my example, I don't pronounce all my English words correctly.

Now that I have accepted this fact, how can I improve?

  • Join Toastmasters and get more practice speaking in front of people
  • Try to learning how to speak more proper
  • Accept who I am and just move on...

Resume of Accomplishments

In the event you choose to accept who you are, you might need an ego boost. What I've done in the past is create a Resume of Accomplishments.

Usually you create a resume of all your education and professional achievements that says look I am qualified. This time you're going to create a resume listing all your accomplishments over the years. You have done some wonderful things and have achieved success, so write them down and review often.

Here are some things you could put down...

  • You did your first Facebook live
  • You solved a major problem
  • You juggle cooking, cleaning, an infant and toddler while working all day
  • You have your degree
  • You said you were going to get XYZ and you got it
  • You're a great friend
  • You're a great mom
  • You're Tech Savvy
  • You got your first paying client/customer
  • You want to be/You are an Entrepreneur
  • You have goals and you've written them down
  • and anything else you can think of...

List all your accomplishments and so when you're feeling like that's good enough, you can be reminded of how AWESOME you are.

Facebook Group of Accomplishments

Something you can do in addition or instead of a resume is create a secret or private Facebook group with just you in it and post all your accomplishment (type, images, videos, whatever) in there. Then you can just scroll through the group and just read and smile.

STEP #3: Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway

Do something every day that scares you. The point is to FEEL THE FEAR and DO IT ANYWAY. You want to train your mind, body, and soul to feel the fear and do the things you want to do anyway. Things that are helpful and will improve your life and business.

If I’m afraid to show up in my business, I’ll go do something unrelated that I’m also afraid of and so that I can feel that fear and proceed through regardless.

For example, I went ziplining in Las Vegas. Not because I have this thing about going zip lining. The opportunity was there and I said you know what, I'm kind of scared to do this thing in my business, I'm kind of scared to show up, let me feel fear and let me do it anyway. And I did it.

I want to challenge you to do that as well so that if you have this fear of hosting your first or your next webinar because maybe the first one didn't go so well, train yourself to feel fear and doing things anyway.

And if you're done letting fear hold you back and YOU are ready to get started with webinars, I've written a comprehensive webinar workbook with ACTIONABLE STEPS to help you to create and host your webinar in the NEXT 30 DAYS. You can grab it by click the image below πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎ

STEP #4: Start With A Teleseminar Instead

Here's an alternative to webinars just to get you going. If the 3 steps above didn't work completely, maybe this will. πŸ˜‰

Swipe out a webinar for a TELESEMINAR. What's a TELESEMINAR? It's like a webinar except you're on the phone. So a conference call basically. Now you don't have to see anyone and nobody is going to see you.

Personally I’m a full believer that people need to see your pretty face, but the first few presentations can by via telesiminars with that floats your boat.

Another thing that's awesome about teleseminars is that you can have your notes right in front of you and you can read your notes while you're on the phone.

Are you a pacer? Because I’m totally a pacer. You can pace up and down the living room giving your presentation while on the phone. You don’t have to stay stuck as a desk worrying if your hair is out of place.

If you are going to use notes, I suggest you go over your notes and do not read them verbatim. Unless you have practice enough that it sounds real natural. I actually suggest just having an outline of your material. Whatever you decide to do, please practice practice practice.

In the event you need your participants to have visuals, you can email them a couple of the slides to follow along.

After The Mental Game The Next Step

Perfect. We just went over a 4 step process for overcoming your webinar fears. To get started, you can take 30 seconds now to think about hosting your first webinar.

What comes up for you? Whatever is the first thing that enters your mind, explore that story.

Now that you know the how to overcome any fears about hosting your first or even your next webinar, you still may not know how to actually get started.

The good news is that I conducted an online survey and hundreds of entrepreneurs responded that the number one thing holding them back was not knowing where to start.

Well I gotch'you!
